OFFF NYC

October 26th, 2007

Video, Audio and Image installation at OFFF 2007 (NYC)
Visuals by Michael Paul Young
Soundtrack by Michael Cina

In mathematics, especially in geometry and topology, an ambient space is the space surrounding a mathematical object. For example, a line may be studied in isolation, or it may be studied as an object in two-dimensional space — in which case the ambient space is the plane, or as an object in three-dimensional space — in which case the ambient space is three-dimensional. To see why this makes a difference, consider the statement “Lines that never meet are necessarily parallel.” This is true if the ambient space is two-dimensional, but false if the ambient space is three-dimensional, because in the latter case the lines could be skew lines, rather than parallel.

Curator Maxalot asked us to create original works for our first ever solo exhibition, WorkFromThem. Printed on Duratrans, using state-of-the-art photographic printing equipment of Durst (Lambda) which is then silicon-glued onto a 4mm metacrylate plate. The frame consists of 8x4cm pine wooden beams “au naturel”, and houses two 30W tube lights. When switched on the light-box gives an excellent chance to study the highly detailed graphics of these creatives. Switched off the art is just as presentable and visible, having a beautiful wooden frame and rich look and feel of the glass-like plate. Created in collaboration with Michael Cina.
